Pearl Jam
now embarked on another European tour, highlighted by the aforementioned Pink
Pop Festival in Holland, appearing before 60,000 fans. The first show was at the Rock Am Ring
Festival on June 5th. Eddie before 'Ritfw' mentioned something that
happened before during the show,
"On Porch, Stone got hit with a bottle. He's gonna have a scar right above
his eye so he'll never forget this night". The subject of bootlegs, is particularly
close to the band's heart. On stage at London's Finsbury Park on June 6th, Eddie
actually told the audience to tape the show (and any others they could!)

I can't...I don't think any of us could take any credit for that. It's all just a crowd and then you channel energy. And to play between Lou Reed and David Byrne and after Soundgarden and all these people that we've listened to for years. It... it's really something else. Look at these pictures... I'll show you these pictures... I'll show you why I feel the way I do. It's a little bit overwhelming to see this many people. I mean I'm sure you've been looking at this... all day... It's a lot people (laughs). We're used to play in small clubs you know. And we wanna go back to play in small clubs", Eddie Vedder. "When we look at these pictures that he has, that'll give us a perspective on like how great of a time it was", Jeff Ament.

After the German shows Pearl Jam returned to Italy to play a gig in Milan at
City Square on June 17th. The show was broadcast on Italian TV. During 'Black'
Eddie saw something in the crowd he didn't like "Hey you fuckers why
don't you stop that". After that Eddie stepped down towards the crowd to get their
attention. He motioned for them to cut it out, sang a line, and then spit in their direction,
he then said "C'mon
spit on me! I don't give a shit"."You guys are hurting people!".
When the song ended Eddie returned to the stage. "Let's talk for a second.
Everyone...You're hurting people... up front. Every time you jump up...and I'm not gonna watch
it... What?... You want
your money back? You can go get your money back -- that's okay. We'll give it to
you twice back! We just have friends up here that are listening to stories. I love you too!
Just don't hurt anybody! I want to be your friend. I want us all to be friends.
That's all -- it's cool...". Next stop, Zurich on June 18th in front of a
500 crowd. Eddie remembered the last time they'd played in Switzerland, "We're
so happy to be here-I mean that. Do you remember the last time we were here?
Does anybody remember? It was very small - and we took all the plugs out of our
instruments and just played it very quietly. It was nice...1,2,3...",
before 'Oceans'. "We
have a prize winner, ladies and gentleman........our governments, our parents,
our teachers, our friends. They all put leashes on us. Drop the leash, drop the
leash. Get out of my fucking face.", Leash.

The Mamasan Trilogy was performed at the Rockhaus in Vienna on June 19th, and in Paris at the Elysee-Montmartre on June 22th. And in front of a 1500 people, Pearl Jam performed in Sweden on June 25th. The show was scheduled to the Melody Maker but due to Pearl Jam's popularity it was moved to the Moderna Museet. With no opening act, Eddie and Mike took the stage to open with two acoustic songs. "This guy's making a tape recording ... everybody be careful ... don't make too much noise. No keep it out. I like that idea. He's OK. Let him tape the show, yeah ... we wanna remember this, right?" Pearl Jam was upset that this show was for 18+ ages only with Eddie remarking, "You know of this thing, Roskilde? We're playing tomorrow. After this, I feel like saying 'fuck it, let's just play here again.' This is the size! It's outdoors ... this is as big as it needs to get ... next time it will be at this place, it will be all ages and it will be cheaper than it was today. This was bullshit and I don't dare say that unless I plan to live up to it so we will live up to it. We'll see you there then, OK?" While they were playing their personal items were stolen backstage.

"[The notebooks are ] no big deal to anyone else, but they mean a fucking lot to me, man. It was real personal shit, you know? And someone walks in while we´re playing and steals´em. Some fucking asshole just walks and steals them. You´re on stage and you think you´re giving everything you´ve got- but there´s always someone who wants more. And if you can´t give it, they´ll just fucking take it" - Eddie about the two composition books he´d been carrying around (one which he´d kept personal scribblings and the other containing all of the lyrics he´d written since the band´s last trip to Europe) which were stolen.
